The keenly awaited film that it was, directed by the much pilloried RGV following HIS AAG, got me interested in watching sarkar raj. i caught the evening show at PVR, after my exam in the morning(needed a bit of stress busting).
The movie started pretty well.. showing abhishek in his natural form as an intense, brooding actor. Amitabh seemed to be quite content at taking the back seat once ashwairya entered the scene.. the scenes were well shot, the dialogue writer seemed to be in excellent form, but somehow i never felt the intensity that i was expecting. The last half hour seemed to be the saving grace of the movie with its suspense ending and its pace which actually keeps you wanting more when the movie ends. Amitabh somehow steals the show in the end, but goodness, gracious, unexpectedly it was aishwarya who really pulls you in with her acting prowess. She was intense throughout and absolutely rocked. The scene at the hospital(second time around) with the three B's is my pick with two of the characters at their emotive best. You come out of the movie not fully satisfied whether it was money's worth( bloody 175 bucks i had to shelve out for a seat second from front), but after a while you do feel that it was as good as it could get.
Hindi film makers seemed to have forgotten that a great screenplay is a prerequisite for guaranteed box office success, just great performances without a great screenplay guarantees nothing.

Unfortunately, that also means its not all good either. Anyways, compliments first for making some brave scripting decisions, which is important for a power-of-politics based movie. Though it is common sense that the story should be the focal point of the movie, yet such movies are few and far between. So, they need to be applauded when they come along. But, alas this one too ultimately fails in taking the audience into the thick of the action. Various tactical twists in the story, especially towards the climax are just to be accepted because “Sarkar” says so.
